3PL Cold Storage Industry - Company Size
Despite an exhaustive search on credible avenues of information, we could not arrive at the requested information. However, we did locate a 2018 report released by Food Logistics. We have executed an analysis based on the findings of the report which we have provided in the section below.
Research Methodology for A breakdown of Cold Storage warehouses by revenue or employee size
We commenced our research by scouring the website of industry associations such as IWLA (International Warehouse Logistics Association), WERC (Warehousing Education and Research Council), and GCCA (Global Cold Chain Alliance: Refrigerated Logistics Association) for the information on the breakdown of cold storage warehouses by revenue or employee size. However, this research strategy proved futile as this research strategy did not yield the required results.
We then switched gears and began searching for the information on the breakdown of cold storage warehouses by revenue or employee size in avenues such as research reports published by supply chain research companies such as Armstrong & Associates, etc. Nevertheless, this research strategy was not successful because most of its research concentrated on overall 3PL companies and not 3PL cold storage companies.
Finally, we decided to unearth publications by the key 3PL cold storage players in the industry with the hope that they might have released articles, blogs, et related to the breakdown of cold storage warehouses by revenue or employee size. However, this research strategy also was not fruitful as none of the key 3PL players provided this information.
Nevertheless, during this search, we located the Food Logistics report that comprised a list of 3PL cold storage warehouses in the US. We also located the employee count of each of these 44 companies. Our research team decided to provide helpful information and thus created a spreadsheet to input the employee count data of each of these 44 companies. We then sorted the list from the lowest to the highest employee count value. After this, we classified the range of employee into six categories as mentioned below. Lastly, we counted the number of companies in each category and converted each into a percentage by dividing it with 44.
Ballpark estimate of the breakdown of Cold Storage warehouses (provided by food logistics) by employee size
<50: 4 = 4/44=9.1%
51-100: 4= 4/44=9.1%
101-500: 18= 18/44=40.9%
501-1000: 4= 4/44=9.1%
1001-1500: 4= 4/44=9.1%
>1500: 10:= 10/44= 22.7%
Please refer to the spreadsheet for the names of these companies with their employee count.
Research methodology for The total number of 3PL Cold Storage warehouses in the U.S.
We began searching for this information on reports, fact sheets, articles, blogs released by industry associations. However, this research strategy was not successful as it the required outcome was not obtained by this approach.
As an alternative research strategy, we decided to look for North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes for 3PL cold storage industry in the US. We came to know that the NAICS Code for general warehousing and storage is 493110. We dug deeper to find the NAICS Code for refrigerated warehousing and storage is 493120. Our research team discovered that the total number of refrigerated warehousing and storage firms in the US is 672 from the US Census website. Our research team has provided the screenshot of the data of breakdown of refrigerated warehousing and storage firms by enterprise employment size obtained from US Census website.
We could not triangulate the number of 3PL cold storage warehouses in the U.S. from the total number of refrigerated warehousing and storage firms because of the lack of availability of the information on the number of 3PL cold storage providers as a percentage of refrigerated warehousing and storage firms in the US. Mathematically, say X% of refrigerated warehousing and storage firms represent 3PL cold storage firms. So, if there had been publicly available information on X we could have used the following equation to arrive at the estimate for the total number of 3PL cold storage warehouses in the US:
Total number of 3PL cold storage warehouses in the US=(X*679)/100
As there was no publicly available information for X, we could not triangulate the estimate for the total number of 3PL cold storage warehouses in the US.
- Growth in 3PL cold storage from 2013 to 2015 is 1.9 million cubic meters.
